Key political leaders in
Rivers State have started reacting to the disbandment of the training camp of
the recently recruited neighborhood watchers of the Rivers State Government by
the Nigerian Army yesterday at Nonwa Gbam.
The training camp, which
also serves as the orientation camp for the National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC), is in Nonwa Gbam in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Reacting to the
incident, current affairs analyst and Secretary to the Ikwerre Local Government
Council, Hon. Obinna Ekem accused the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon.
Rotimi Amaechi of using state security apparatus to frustrate the efforts of
the Rivers State Government to tackle insecurity and restore peace and order in
the state.
Ekem told Kristina
Reports that the action of the Army yesterday has confirmed fears that the
Federal Government is orchestrating the rising incidents of killings and
violence in the state and called on the Nigerian Army to resist the temptation
of being used by one man to cause chaos in the state ahead of the election.
He wondered why the
Federal Government will permit other states like Lagos to set up the same
security apparatus to help the Police tackle insecurity but was frustrating the
efforts of the Rivers State Government to do the same.
Meanwhile, some leaders of
the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have commended the Nigerian
Army for what they described as timely rescue of the state from imminent
breakdown of law and order in the state.
A leader of the APC in
Ikwerre Local Government Area, Hon. Bestman Amadi accused the Rivers State
Government of recruiting militants and cultists to enhance their shooting
skills that would be used to unleash violence on Rivers electorates during the
2019 Elections.
Hon. Amadi, in a
telephone interview with our correspondent, Obinna Ebogidi said the
neighborhood watch was a ploy by the Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike
to raise a personal army of killers to harass and assault members of the
opposition during the 2019 general elections.
Similarly, the Chairman
of the APC in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Sydney Nyeche has queried
why the state government should arm the neighborhood watchers just weeks to the
2019 general election if its intentions were genuine.
The APC stalwart told Kristina
Reports that it was unconstitutional for the neighborhood watchers to bear arms
and would spell doom for the state if the Army had not acted timely.
He urged the Rivers
State Government to be proactive and liaise with the existing law enforcement
agencies to bring calm and end the troubling trend of killings in the state.
